Director Beppe Marotta has pledged to ‘defend’ Alessandro Bastoni after a two-match ban, while he confirms Jose Mourinho was ‘never considered’ for a second spell at Inter.

The Roma coach is back at San Siro as an opponent for the first time this evening in the Coppa Italia quarter-final.

The Treble winner of 2010 was greeted with a huge cheer and applause from the crowd when his name was read out by the speaker at the end of the team sheets.

Considering Mourinho is back in Serie A, did Inter consider bringing him in for a second spell?

“No, that was never considered,” current director general Marotta told Sport Mediaset.

“Mourinho wrote the greatest page in the history book of this club, so he is owed the right credit and appreciation for that.

“This is all we can say on a great professional.”

Marotta also commented on the decision to give defender Bastoni a two-match Serie A ban for insulting the assistant referee.

According to the centre-back, all he said was ‘you were rubbish’ after his substitution.

“We will analyse the referee’s report and the verdict with our lawyer and evaluate what is to be done so we can protect our player.

“Having said that, we must also improve in the way we deal with setbacks and disappointments. We have to improve ourselves and that is the objective.”
