Inter CEO Beppe Marotta admits they are likely to ‘get the cherry on the cake’ of the transfer market with a midfielder, expected to be Maxime Lopez of Sassuolo or Tottenham’s Tanguy Ndombele.

The chief was in Monaco to attend the Champions League group phase draw, which saw the Nerazzurri placed in the same group as Benfica, RB Salzburg and Real Sociedad.

Meanwhile, he was also questioned on the transfer window, which in Italy will close on Friday at 19.00 UK time (18.00 GMT).

After the arrival of Benjamin Pavard, there have been suggestions Inter are still seeking a new midfielder after the deal with Udinese for Lazar Samardzic collapsed.

“We are very happy with the squad at Inzaghi’s disposal, but we are also alert on the transfer market to see if there are any opportunities to be taken. I think we will do something, as I am optimistic and feel we need to get that cherry on the cake with a player who has characteristics that are not currently present in the squad,” Marotta told Sky Sport Italia.

He was asked specifically about the rumoured targets, who are Sassuolo midfielder Maxime Lopez and Ndombele of Tottenham.

“I do not want to illude or let down anyone who might’ve been contacted. I can say we are seeking to complete the squad, so if someone does arrive, we will be happy, but if he doesn’t then we’ll still be happy.”

It would be a return to Serie A for Ndombele, who spent last season on loan at Napoli and played his part in winning the Serie A title.
