Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta admitted the ‘regrets’ of not ‘taking advantage of the great opportunities’ against Milan, but stressed the match was a great advert for Italian football.

The Nerazzurri are still seven points behind Milan and Napoli after the 1-1 draw at San Siro in the first Derby della Madonnina on Sunday.

Marotta admitted Inter have regrets after the stalemate, but pointed at a ‘beautiful match’ which represented Serie A in a great way.

“I would like to underline how the derby was a beautiful advert for the world of football,” Marotta told Radio Anch’io Sport. “It was seen in 150 countries, and it was a beautiful match, played well and at a high pace.

“The regret remains, we tried to win but didn’t succeed, also thanks to the opponents.”

Inzaghi: ‘Inter deserved more than Milan’

Marotta agrees Milan are growing under coach Stefano Pioli but wants to evaluate the Scudetto battle after 19 games.

“We are in an interlocutory phase of the championship,” he continued. “We have played five home games and seven away games.

“We are waiting to reach the end of the first round to make the first assessment. Milan have grown in the Pioli era, reaching the maximum level.

“Now, they play an authoritative role in the Scudetto battle. We are reigning champions, and we will honour the Scudetto we have on our chest. It will be a hard-fought championship.”

The Nerazzurri have struggled against the big teams in Serie A this term, including draws against Juventus and Atalanta, while losing to Lazio.

“This can be a small flaw, we have to improve, the details make the difference, but we have put in great performances,” Marotta added.

“We didn’t take advantage of the opportunities. Against Juve we suffered a penalty in stoppages, with Lazio the same, then losing a bad game.

“Yesterday, we had great opportunities that we didn’t take advantage of.”
