Mario Rui is “well aware of what I can give to the team” after completing his transfer to Roma.

The Portuguese left-back arrived from Empoli this summer and was presented at a Press conference today.

“It’s wonderful to arrive at a club like Roma. My teammates immediately helped me feel at ease and I thank them for that.

“Roma have always been a difficult opponent to face with great players. They can cause anyone trouble, but it was also fun to take them on.

“It’s wonderful to arrive at a club like Roma. My teammates immediately helped me feel at ease and I thank them for that.

“Roma have always been a difficult opponent to face with great players. They can cause anyone trouble, but it was also fun to take them on.

“If Roma signed me, there has to be a reason. I am aware of my quality and what I can give to the team, but also how the side can help me become a better player. We can do well together.

“This is the chance of a lifetime and I really didn’t expect the call from such a big club. I can and must improve in every aspect, but I am only 25, so that’s natural. I will try to write my history for the club.

“So far I don’t think there are many tactical changes from how I played at Empoli. I’ll try to attack more, of course not forgetting the defensive manoeuvres. We’ll have more possession and therefore I can push forward more.

“Considering how the season ended, I think if Roma can be consistent, we can fight it out with anyone. We only get to play Juventus twice over the course of the campaign, so they have to be treated as two Finals.”

Mario Rui is Portuguese, but has never been called up by his country. Does he hope to break into the side after their Euro 2016 triumph?

“The victory in the Euros meant so much, as we are a small country with only 11 million inhabitants, so you cannot imagine the joy at winning something on an international level.

“I hope one day to represent my country. I never spoke to the Federation, but it’s a dream and I can only earn the call by doing well for my club.”
