The tension between Napoli and Mario Rui is reaching breaking point, as the Portugal international is training separately with no sign of being brought back into the squad.

The 33-year-old has been at the club since the summer of 2017 and his contract runs to June 2026.

However, there was a massive breakdown in the rapport during that difficult last season and he was put on the transfer market.

There was interest from several clubs including Sao Paulo, Istanbul Basaksehir, Villarreal, OGC Nice and Lille, but the Portugal international turned them all down.

Mario Rui and Napoli stuck with each other

Coach Antonio Conte and President Aurelio De Laurentiis do not seem to have any intention of welcoming him back into the side, so he will continue to earn €2m per season after tax (€4m net) until June 2026.

It is a sad end to the situation after 227 matches for Napoli, the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia together.
