Umberto Marino suggested Jose Mourinho ‘told the truth’ about officiating following his insinuation that Francesco Acerbi’s winner against Spezia was offside.

The Roma coach sparked controversy after alluding that the goal was offside, complaining about the quality of refereeing of display. Lazio responded with a statement today hitting back at the Portuguese coach. The topic of poor officiating has been heated this season and seems set to continue.

Speaking to Sky Sports Italia before Atalanta’s match against Salernitana, Marino first looked ahead to the game.

“Today we will find a team with great motivation, on a par with us. Both teams are playing for something important, they have to put 150% on the field.”

He then touched on if the team still feel involved in the race for European qualification, and Mourinho’s statements.

“I have to answer with a quote. Three things you cannot hide, the sun, the moon and the truth.

“Mourinho told the truth, then you can question the methods, the timing, but what happened takes away certainties from the clubs, the workers, the fans. Then we have to give serenity to the referees.”

Finally, Marino discussed if there was any danger that Atalanta had given up now, considering their position in the table.

“No, absolutely not, the team wants to do well in this league and return to Europe.”

Referees have come under fire constantly this season for a number of high profile mistakes, such as Destiny Udogie’s winner against Milan earlier in the season, which appeared to be a handball. These mistakes could prove costly in a season, so fans and clubs alike are concerned about the usage or VAR, or lack thereof.

  1. What about Giroud fouling Alexis Sanchez, brutally barging him off the ball, Milan go the other way and score? No one remembers that ‘non-foul’? When neither the refs nor VAR could find a ‘clear error’?

  2. @1MIKEJ – Yeah when it’s against Milan or for Inter’s benefit, it’s surely the crime of the century, but when Milan benefits from it, the excuses, deflections and, in your case, insults start from Milan fans. Milan benefitted from what was a potential 6pt swing against Inter and no one says boo about it. And let’s not forget against Roma or Venezia, yet everyone acts like there’s some deep conspiracy to ensure Inter win. Inter’s owners who are practically bankrupt and selling their best players to stay afloat but somehow are able to find the funds to bribe refs all through the season just to win the league? Gimme a break.

  3. Mourinho sparked controversy?? You mean the referees right!! Jose just called it out, because if he hadn’t there probably wouldn’t be anything spoken of it just like the Genoa incident, where the player was tripped up and should have had a pen and there should’ve been a red card for the Lazio player but for some weird reason Lazio escaped with neither, even the highlights cut that part out to try and limit any rescission!! Corruption at its finest

  4. @Luigi, please before commenting, learn about football and rules. A challenge from the side is not a foul in Italy or any other place. Now go on to play with your Barbies son…

  5. @luigi what about the foul on Fiorentina by Theo yesterday. the way Theo elbow he Fiorentina player should have been red card. but the ref let it slide. and what about Theo foul on Damien during inter and ac Milan during copal Italian that foul should have been a penalty and Theo would have been sent off
