Pierpaolo Marino wants the usage of VAR to be clearer following the penalty awarded to Inter in their 2-1 win over Udinese.

The Nerazzurri doubled their lead late in the first half after they were awarded a penalty following a fairly close call after a challenge on Edin Dzeko. Whilst Lautaro Martinez did miss the initial spot kick, he netted the rebound. Referee Daniele Chiffi initially didn’t point to the spot following the challenge, but changed his mind after looking at the VAR monitor.

Speaking to Italia Uno, Udinese general manager Marino discussed the need for greater clarity regarding the usage of VAR.

“It was an open game until the last minute. Inter had a great determination but also a great fear, especially when Udinese reopened the match which was then decided by a penalty kick in the first half that referee Chiffi had not initially awarded.

“Was there one? Yes, but we should talk a lot about the fact that VAR intervenes when and how. We are told in meetings that it should only intervene on penalties that the referee hasn’t seen, not on ‘penalties’.”

He then spoke further about the decision to award Inter a penalty, something which could have an effect on the title race with Milan this season.

“This is a penalty that Udinese fans don’t see, then in other venues it is recognised. But I don’t want to appeal to that and create excuses, let’s give credit to Inter for playing a determined match. In the end they won and they deserve the credit, but Udinese played a very good match.”

The topic of poor officiating and inadequate usage of VAR has become increasingly heated this season, with many clubs complaining about a number of strange decisions.

  1. The decisions Inter have had this season have been farcical. I’m sure their fans will still find a way to moan about refs. If I was a Milan fan I’d fuming.

  2. Inter have paid off the referees without any doubt. To get the “penalties” they are getting and not being penalized on so many clear instances, and all of this in the age of VAR, points to them having paid off the referees.

This team is a shame for the sport of football.

  3. Milan has already won the scudetto in everyone’s eyes. Even if Inter ends up winning in the end, nobody will care about their paper scudetto, just like nobody counts any title they won in the 2000s

  4. It was a clear penalty. Marino is ridiculously wrong to continue to make a point about it. Udinese did nothing to win the game. And Andy….everyone but you counts those Titles.

  5. @Andy: Even the titles Juve won in the early 2000s are still included in their tally with the exception of one. You are clearly delusional fan. Inter brought glory to the Serie A by being the ONLY treble winners in Italy during a period when the league was considered a laughing stock. Check the facts before spewing nonsense.

  6. Funny how Moratta recently gave a talk to VAR referees in the past week or so eh?
For what reason he’s allowed to do so still makes no sense to me. Major conflict of interest and all.
Seems like all the sketchy advantages his teams receive moved from Juve to Inter as well.

  7. Ex Serie A refs Graziano Cesari and Luca Marelli both confirmed it was a correct pk. So whatever juventini/milanisti believe is irrelevant. What was Mari doing fully stretching his leg like that? Obviously he wasn’t going for the ball.

  8. @Andy

You are an ignorant idiot. Milan literally beat Lazio after a push by Tonali and they beat Inter after a push by Giroud. Yet refs allowed illegitimate goals to stand. Not to mention Roma complaining about Milan robbing them in both games this season. Spalletti and Osimhen also wanted a pk after Tomori fouled Osimhen. Milan have had their fair share of lucky calls this season to add to 200 pks last season. Do not pretend that refs are against Milan it is a laughable and ignorant claim.

  9. @Jack

Inter scored more goals than Milan last season despite Milan getting more pks. Explain that then. Which pk Inter got was wrong, list them.

  10. Simple in binter games only binter can have a pen if you dont belive me just go and ask torino.Gravina have to make them champions so they get easyer groop in CL.Or they will be troped out in a group whit shahtar, redstart belgrad, and rb laipzig thats how low they are.

  11. @the clueless Not a Serie A fan

Season 2019-2020. Marotta was at Inter.

Inter finished 2nd a point behind juve.

Inter 1-1 Cagliari. Pk denied after Young was fouled

Inter 2-2 Parma. 2 pks denied after Lautaro and Biraghi were fouled

Roma 2-2 Inter. A goal for Roma stands despite Kolarov fouling Lautaro

Lazio 2-1 Inter. Skriniar and De Vrij pulled, no pk to Inter.

Lecce 1-1 Inter. Donati terrible challenge on Barella, yet no red card

Marotta sure is influential huh? Idiot.

  12. I’m glad now other teams are trolling Milan by releasing statements tag they know will results in Milan fans crying that they play the best football but Inter gets favoured that’s why Inter have better stats than any other team in Italy. It surely must be the refs there’s no other way of explaining it even tho all matches are available for everyone to see. If I think about it I just can’t imagine the amount of goals Inter scored when Dzeko is the main striker the guy doesn’t even take penalties and slow which seems he play in slow motion yet he’s in the top 10 I believe. Just goes to show how much Inter are as a team and people have seen how Hakan performs in national team and how he does at Inter. I still believe the best team will win the league even when it’s just one match left but it might not go that far. Milan know they need all the luck in the world to win the league but Inter even after losing to Bologna can still win the league which means Milan will cry as expected.

  13. @Not a serie a fan

Good that you aren’t a Serie A fan, yet you claim that you have a clue when you obviously have none. Explain how Inter pay refs yet penalties were awarded this season against Inter leading to loss of points against juve, Lazio and Napoli? Cheques didn’t arrive in time, huh moron ?

  14. Inter winning the scudetto with all those wages will still be a modesty or worst, undeservedly, but they will be the most bs team if Milan does win it, since they always brag their stats and defend those crooked eyed refs giving them all those favor.
With normal refs in Serie A, Milan would’ve lead with 10 to 12 points by now, counting all the points indirectly taken from Milan and all the undeserved favour Inter given.
    Inter fans are hypocrites……

  15. @Ranajaya

There are no bigger hypocrites on earth than Milanisti. Your biggest wins of the season were because of refs.

Against Lazio (Tonali push on Acerbi), against Inter (Giroud push on Sanchez), against Napoli (Tomori foul on Osimhen) and against Roma (twice, Kjaer foul on Pellegrini and Tonali foul on Zaniolo)

Yet you cry. Hilarious. Had not for refs you would be miles behind Inter just like last season.

  16. What push on Acerbi?? he had just cleared the initial cross into the box and was falling off balance from it Tonali was just stopping him from pulling him down also.

When Brahim diaz gets pushed off the ball every week because of his size none of you say anything, but when same thing happens to sanchesz its GBH

What do you say about the udinese player clearly pushing the ball into the net to score his goal?
what do you say about the referee calling back play for a free kick instead of playing the advantage when Milan just scored a winning goal?

What do you say about the roma player handling the ball onto the Milan player and then roma getting a penalty from it?

We should be at least 9 points clear as a fact by now, all your talk about supposed fouls are just hypothetical, factual hand balls and goals wrongly disallowed are things that are clear and in the rules, but the people behind VAR have “missed” these calls when everyone in the world saw them in real time, how do they miss them? ask don beppe

  17. @Flavio Amado

Inter scored more goals because they like to beat up on the little team when they’re down. 10 goals against Salernitana, 4 against Genoa, 4 against Cagliari is exactly why the GD stat is pointless. Just goes to show Inter like to kick relegation fodder sides when they’re down. Don’t see them doing the same against the big sides, eh?

Also, it’s only a game bro, why you so mad? XD

  18. Chill guys ,whatever happens, it usually evens out in the end

This is going down to the wire

If inter wins I’m happy no matter what others say

If Milan wins, congrats to them, no hard feelings

    Forza inter

  19. Guys, guys, stop fighting.
Juventus comes on top as the most privileged & favoured team in the leage throughout the years; Your two teams, Milan & Inter, come in second.
You are BOTH in second place, you don’t need to fight over it!😆

  20. @Jack

Inter put 6 past Roma and 4 past Napoli. 3 past Milan in Coppa. But in any case it is normal that top clubs score more against lesser sides than fellow top clubs of similar strength. Not that it makes games against ‘smaller’ clubs guaranteed wins for anyone. Not angry at all btw just don’t like hypocrisy

  21. Milan haven’t had a penalty in 3 months. According to referee experts, there was a clear penalty in the Lazio game when Luis Alberto handled the ball and another clear penalty when Ikone took out Leao in the last match, which wasn’t called.

Meanwhile, Inter gets the softest calls in their favor. Then the most blatant penalty happens in their box (Torino match) and both the referee AND VAR go blind!

    Coincidence?

  22. Milan fans are obsessed with Inter getting favours yet they themselves fail to realise that without those very same refs who made decisions for them in critical points then they wouldn’t even be fighting for the scudetto. That guy who claimed Inter only score against relegation sides must have a very short memory when Inter beat Milan comfortably by 3 goals. Most goals would be disallowed when an attacker push a defender wether falling down or not but for Milan see it as a perfect goal and he wasn’t pushing but just touching the defender if that’s not a favour then I don’t don’t know what it is.

  23. @Milan fan

3 Referee experts said the Dzeko penalty was correct. I am naming them and you can use our friend Google

Graziano Cesari, Luca Marelli and Mauro Bergonzi

  24. @Milan fan

Referee experts also said that Perisic was fouled before Bologna equalized so Arnautovic goal to make it 1-1 was illegal. Look it up. But you obviously do not care because the result suits you nicely. 😉
