SPAL coach Pasquale Marino hails the ‘huge achievement’ of knocking Sassuolo out of the Coppa Italia and can’t wait to face Juventus in the quarter-final.

The game was changed a couple of minutes into the second half, when Filip Djuricic was sent off using VAR for a high tackle.

After that, Simone Missiroli and Lorenzo Dickmann found the back of the net to send SPAL into the quarter-final for the first time since 1981.

“I can only congratulate Sassuolo for their first half performance and it would’ve been a very different game for us without the red card,” confessed Marino on RAI Sport.

“Sassuolo play good football, it is difficult to limit their passing game. I’m happy that we limited them and then made the most of the extra man.

“It was still a huge achievement, even against 10 men, because Sassuolo are an excellent team. It’s obvious that we took advantage of the dismissal and the extra spaces this created.

“We also have to thank Etrit Berisha, who is the best goalkeeper in Serie B, and he proved that again today.”

SPAL are the only remaining Serie B side in the Coppa Italia and will take on Juventus later this month.

“We are satisfied and can’t wait to face Juve.”
