Enzo Maresca has reportedly quit West Ham United after Manuel Pellegrini was fired, despite being offered the chance to stay with David Moyes.

According to Sky Sport Italia and La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Premier League club was eager to keep Maresca in his role as assistant manager, or at least remain in the coaching staff once new boss Moyes was brought in.

There had even been suggestions in Italy that West Ham wanted Maresca to take over as manager, until the decision was made to bring back Moyes for a second stint.

However, the Italian opted to walk away after 18 months, showing loyalty to sacked Pellegrini.

Maresca had signed a three-year contract with the Hammers in June 2018, brought in from Sevilla FC at the request of Pellegrini.

The 39-year-old only retired from his playing career in January 2017.
