Claudio Marchisio discussed the pain of missing out on the World Cup, changes needed for the Azzurri and his future in the world of football.

The Italian national team failed to qualify for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar after losing to North Macedonia 1-0 in their play-off match last month. It’s the second consecutive World Cup missed by the Azzurri, an incredibly painful fact that highlights the need for sweeping changes in Italian football.

Speaking to Tuttosport, Marchisio first reacted to Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup.

“There is great regret because in the summer we became European champions. The defeat against Macedonia hurts even more than the elimination against Sweden, we are all sad and embittered.”

He highlighted how the Azzurri need to bring in more young players in order to overhaul and rejuvenate the squad.

“There are many players to start from, I am thinking of Donnarumma, Verratti and Bastoni as well as Locatelli, Frattesi and Raspadori and then we need to reform the training of our youngsters.

“In football schools we think about winning and the result, not so much about developing the youngsters.”

Finally, Marchisio discussed his plans for the future in the world of football.

“I’m interested in being a coach, in September I’ll enrol in the course.”

Italy’s failure to qualify for the tournament broke hearts up and down the Italian peninsula. Despite the defeat, coach Roberto Mancini did not resign and will oversee the new era of the Azzurri, who are set for a significant overhaul ahead of Euro 2024.

Former regulars like Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne are expected to resign from the national team in order to make way for the new generation.

  1. @MG- finished, lol. Italy just won the Euros
If you wanna talk about arrogant, let’s talk England

  2. Here we have the england fans hahahahaha yes our football is in a bed place but we will be back don’t worry, I’m very up to date with what goes on in our football and our future will be very good, and what of lovely England? Claim to be the invetors of football and have nothing to show for it other than an world cup win in 66 back when the trophy looked like a year 6 sports day prize, let’s be honest the only reason the Premier league is the best league is down to top foreign players, at least when serie a was the best league it was full of Italians and will be again, stick your brexit up your arse, most bigmouth deluded nation in europe. “Its coming home” you slag of nations who have achieved so much more than you ever will. Typical England hahahaha never change you are entertainment for us Europeans

  3. @dennis – you forgot to mention that the PL’s success is also because of the European coaches. Remember, an English manager has NEVER won the CL or the EL. An English manager has never even won the PL! German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese managers win the English league LOL.

  4. @Feroli yes you are correct haha, big talkers as usual, talk as if they have won so much at international level, they have the nerve to call other footballing nations like holland the under achievers when holland have been in so many more finals than england who have only been in 2… and the 2nd one was the euros just gone… nations like greece have even won the euros but mighty england have not…

  5. It is true that EPL is only that great because of foreign coaches and owners etc. However once an irrelevant league they revolutionised their league back in 92 and have gone from strength to strength. Italy has gone the opposite and their stubborn ways are the root cause of the decline and there is no going back. Also look at Chelsea they actually have one of the best academies in the word and give James and Mount a chance. Same with Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool. Even Pep sees the potential in Foden.

  6. Yes the premier league has more money but let’s not pretend Italians don’t play for top teams. They do. From Barella to locatelli to Tonali to kean. I admit the premier league have better youth academies but serie a needs more investment.
