Former Italy international Claudio Marchisio believes Inter centre-back Alessandro Bastoni has ‘shown he can do very well with the national team’.

Marchisio retired in October 2019, after a one-year stint with Zenit St Petersburg in Russia.

The former Juventus midfielder, who spent 13 years with the Bianconeri, was capped 55 times by Italy and scored five times in the Azzurri shirt.

The 35-year-old is looking forward to seeing the Nerazzurri defender for Italy in Euro 2020 this summer, as he feels the youngster has impressed so far.

“He’s a young player who has grown a lot in the last year,” Marchisio told RAI 2. “He has shown he can do well with the national team too.

“He could be a solution to replace an injured [Giorgio] Chiellini and to rest [Francesco] Acerbi.”

Bastoni could get the nod to play against Wales today, as he fights with Acerbi for the place next to Leonardo Bonucci in defence.
