The goalkeeper has been frozen out of the Cagliari squad for a year due to a contract dispute and is unlikely to ever play for the club again.

“How much do I miss football? So very much,” he told the Gazzetta dello Sport after playing for the Primavera youth team this weekend.

“I like to play, challenge myself and take on every obstacle. Many ask me how it feels to go from representing Italy to being locked out of the sport.

“My answer is that I left home at 14 for football, so anything is possible. The important thing is not to give in.

“With a professional attitude, sacrifices and values, the truth always comes out.”

Marchetti was banished by President Massimo Cellino, who was furious when the goalkeeper said he'd be interested in a move to a bigger club after going to the World Cup.

“There were many difficult moments and I lost my temper a few times, so I must thank my teammates and friends for giving me a hand.

“It's not easy to be out of the sport and watching the games on television just kills me. But I kept saying to myself that I'd be crazy to give in.

“I have a contract until 2013, but we'll see what the future holds in June. Never say never.”
