Former Lazio goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani believes Alex Meret is better than GigioDonnarumma.

The Napoli shot-stopper was one of the best players on the pitch against Milan last night, having produced at least two decisive saves in the first half.

Meret’s stay at the Stadio Maradona was in doubt over the summer as the Partenopei negotiated with Keylor Navas for several weeks but eventually gave up on the Costa Rica international as he didn’t reach an agreement on a payout to leave PSG on a free transfer.

“Napoli had doubt about Meret, but I’ve never had,” Marchegiani told Sky Sport Italia following Napoli’s 2-1 win over Milan at San Siro last night.

“He lacks a bit of experience, but to me, he is one of the best Italian goalkeepers, even better than Donnarumma.”

Meret joined Napoli on a permanent €26m deal from Udinese in the summer of 2019. However, he hasn’t been a regular starter at the Stadio Maradona, with Carlo Ancelotti, Gennaro Gattuso and Luciano Spalletti often preferring David Ospina to the 25-year-old.

Meret admitted in a recent interview that last summer was ‘difficult’ but confirmed that his agent (Federico Pastorello) is in talks over a new deal at Napoli.

His current contract runs out at the end of the season.
