Marcelino’s chances of becoming Inter Coach have suddenly plummeted due to his wage demands, as Stefano Pioli challenges Gianfranco Zola.

According to the Corriere dello Sport this morning, Marcelino is no longer the favourite to replace Frank de Boer.

He had two meetings with Suning Group representatives on Friday and Saturday, but the issue could well come down to his wage demands.

It’s reported the ex-Villarreal boss is asking for €1m per season more than Pioli or Zola.

The Spaniard also wants full decisional powers when it comes to transfers.

The fact he also has no Serie A experience is beginning to cause a concern for the club, specifically unofficial consultant Kia Joorabchian.

Pioli was backed by Italian directors Piero Ausilio and Giovanni Gardini, but they were both left out of the interviews with the prospective Coaches.

Now Zola is seen as a candidate who can unite both sides of the club, as he is Italian, but has an international profile in China thanks to his time at Chelsea.

Marco Silva and Guus Hiddink are also outside bets, but it seems to be between those three now.

Inter play Crotone at San Siro today at 17.00 GMT under the guidance of caretaker manager Stefano Vecchi, who was promoted from the Primavera youth team.

A decision was expected today, but reports are starting to build up that it could be postponed to tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, Tuttosport suggest there is a very good reason Inter are offering a contract to June 2018 – that is when Diego Simeone’s current deal with Atletico Madrid expires and he will become available.

Simeone worked at Inter as a midfielder and has never disguised his desire to return one day as their Coach.

Meanwhile, the various factions within the club continue to break apart, as CEO Michael Bolingbroke is expected to be dismissed shortly.
