Marcelino: ‘All or nothing for Valencia’

Marcelino confirms his Valencia team “intend to win” their all-or-nothing Champions League game with Juventus tomorrow night.

The Spanish side will be eliminated with anything but a win if Manchester United beat Young Boys, while the hosts need only a draw to go through.

“It’s a game in an important competition against one of the candidates to win it,” Marcelino said in his pre-match Press conference.

“We intend to win, because our future in the Champions League depends on it. It will be a long, difficult match, but the team is in good shape.

“It’s not easy for our opponents to deal with us, we play with intensity and we hope that can deliver us the win.

“We have to aim to win, any distraction from looking at another result won’t lead to anything good.”

Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to be out for revenge, having been sent off in the first match at Mestalla.

“He’s an extraordinary player, but I don’t think his sending off in Valencia will have much relevance because the opponent doesn’t decide who is sent off.

“If that were the case I’d always play 11 against zero.

“He, as he’s shown throughout his career, always plays to the maximum, he wants to win, he wants to score and aside from his great talent he has this boundless ambition to be the best of all time.

“So I don’t think we’ll face a different Cristiano to the one we were used to in Spain, and we know very well what his characteristics are.”

Manchester United beat Juve in Turin in the last match, could the match offer a blueprint for Valencia?

“Each game has its own story,” Marcelino replied.

“The teams have different styles and characteristics. What I’d like tomorrow is the ability to centre it like Manchester United did and, regardless of the merits, I’d like to win, as Manchester did.

“Juve were superior, they had almost reached the win, but victory in football comes down to goals. If you play worse but score more goals, you win. We have an opportunity to win tomorrow.”

Paulo Dybala didn’t play in Spain, how will his presence affect things?

“He wasn’t there, but [Federico] Bernardeschi played very well against us. There will be differences, but any player Allegri picks will be a top player.

“Dybala is in great form and he’s a top player, but all the Juve players are extraordinary. We’re not worried by a single player, but what Juventus can do as a collective.

“We need to block the strength of Juventus.”
