The last few days have been dominated by confusion and controversy over Leonardo Pavoletti’s latest ACL tear, with some claiming it occurred during a drunken fight with teammate Luca Cigarini, something both players outright denied in a joint press conference.

“It was a bit of a complicated week, especially ahead of a very important match. So much has been said and I’d like to give my version,” said the coach in his press conference.

“We are all sorry for Leo and will try to be strong to help him through this. Some inaccurate reports emerged this week that made it complicated, but also helped unite us as a group even more. We want to send a strong signal tomorrow for the real fans who care about this club and its colours.

“I am convinced, more than any other, that this is the game where we can turn things around and an opportunity we must take. We need all our heart and the support of the fans.”

Radja Nainggolan is suspended and Marko Rog injured, while Luca Ceppitelli is back for a spot on the bench, so January signing Gaston Pereiro could get the nod.

“Pereiro is certainly one of the options from the start and I am curious to discover this player too. As always, we prepared Plan A and Plan B, so we’ll see what happens.

“He is coming from a different environment, as is Alberto Paloschi, and they can bring something new to the group.”

Cagliari were in fourth place in November, but have now extended their winless streak to 10 games in all competition.

“We are the sixth best attack in the league, but are certainly conceding too many goals,” confessed Maran.

“It’s up to us to figure out our status in this division and make the most of our capabilities.”
