Rolando Maran insists Genoa ‘are on the right track’ after making life difficult for Juventus until a late 3-1 capitulation.
The Grifone had held out well for the entire first half, then bit back against Paulo Dybala with a Stefano Sturaro equaliser, but the two late Cristiano Ronaldo penalties ultimately decided the 3-1 result.
“Juventus is a team full of champions, so they make you run a great deal and in the long run, that fatigue will affect you,” Maran told Sky Sport Italia.
“I am really disappointed for the lads, because they tried everything and perhaps I could’ve helped them more too this evening. We always tried to stay solid and play with the spirit of sacrifice.
“It’s a difficult time at the moment, we often lack sharpness and aren’t clear-headed in certain situations. For example, in the first half we got some fairly simple counter-attacks wrong.
“I am convinced we are on the right track, but the confidence comes with results. This is the spirit of a team that will eventually be able to celebrate.”
The fixture list isn’t very kind to Genoa either, as they are up against Serie A leaders Milan in the midweek round on Wednesday.
“We knew that we’d be facing teams who are still unbeaten, but we went close to a positive result today and that should give us belief. If we learn from our mistakes and build on the positives, we can progress.
“I remain convinced this team has found the way out of this situation. It won’t happen from one day to the next, but we’ll be proved right in the long run.”
