Cagliari Coach Rolando Maran praised his team’s “heart” to come back from a goal down and beat Parma 2-1, their first win of 2019.

“Today when everything seemed most difficult and we had so many injuries, that Parma scored against the run of play with their first shot on goal, we kept our heads and went to take this victory,” Maran told Sky Sport Italia.

“It was well deserved, as we pushed from start to finish against a side that is very strong away from home. The lads showed great heart and it wasn’t easy to keep their cool in these circumstances. I am very happy for the lads, as it was a very difficult moment.”

Maran had been at risk after a run of one point from six competitive games, failing to score in five of them.

Leonardo Pavoletti proved decisive with a brace, including a trademark towering header.

“When Juraj Kucka’s effort went in off the bar, it felt like the usual routine, that we go behind with the first chance. Instead, we showed strength to react and push hard for this much-needed victory.

“Pavoletti has this remarkable ability to attack the ball and get there before anyone else. Winning it so late on also added pathos to the evening.”

Luca Pellegrini went off in tears with a nasty cut to his knee.

“He got some studs raked down his knee, but it shouldn’t be anything serious.”
