The Stadio Diego Armando Maradona will be formally opened and a new statue of the Napoli and Argentina legend unveiled on July 29.

According to LaPresse and the Corriere dello Sport, the local council in Naples has now finalised the details.

Although the Stadio San Paolo has been referred to as the Stadio Maradona since a few days after El Pibe de Oro’s death in November 2020, the official renaming ceremony was postponed.

That will now take place on the evening of July 29, and this is also the date for another special event commemorating Maradona.

A statue of the football icon has been donated to the city by artist Mimmo Sepe and will be unveiled on the same night.

It is due to stand outside the stadium that also bears Maradona’s name.

Maradona wore the Napoli jersey from 1984 to 1991, making 257 competitive appearances for the club, in which he scored 115 goals.

With Diego in their side, Napoli won two Serie A titles, the UEFA Cup, the Italian Supercup and the Coppa Italia.
