Diego Armando Maradona declared he wants “to return to Napoli and that means clarifying my position around taxes.”

The Argentine is currently barred from setting foot on Italian soil, as he still owes €38m in unpaid taxes.

“It is right to pay taxes, but I feel the authorities should have a human face when dealing with people, not just those who are rich, but above all those who are poor,” Maradona told Sky TG24.

“In terms of peace and social development of a country, it is only right that the authorities try not to create fear or even terror. Paying taxes is the right thing to do and I never stepped back from that.

“I have been prevented from coming back to Italy until now and I hope justice will be done. My desire is to return to Italy, embrace all the Neapolitans and my friends who live in Italy. I have missed 20 years.”

Maradona is currently the Coach of Dubai club Al-Wasl, but has been linked with a job at Napoli, possibly as their roving ambassador.

“I am not a tax evader and I want to prove it. I was never condemned by the court of appeal and want to clarify things so I can resolve all the misunderstandings and injustices that were done. I always paid all the taxes that I knew about.”
