Diego Armando Maradona junior was emotional when discussing Napoli’s thrilling start to the season, praising the work of Luciano Spalletti and his squad.

The Partenopei are looking to retake the top spot in Serie A with a win in today’s clash with Bologna, a result that would take them two points clear of second place Atalanta. Things are equally impressive in the Champions League and Napoli have already booked their spot in the Round of 16, winning all four of their European outings so far.

Speaking to Calciomercato.com, Maradona junior first discussed Napoli’s work on the pitch this season.

“They’re writing history, of the club and of the Champions League. They’re doing very well in the league, but in Serie A in recent years they have almost always been at a high level.

“It is in Europe that they impress, with fantastic results. They are laying the foundations for something important.”

He spoke about how it feels to enter the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

“It’s a great feeling, a great pride. I’m happy that they named it after my father, he deserved it. I’ve been going there since I was four years old, I feel at home in that stadium.”

He gave his thoughts on Spalletti’s most important player this season.

“I’d say Lobotka, he’s fundamental. It’s normal to say that Kvaratskhelia is very strong, that Raspadori and Simeone are doing well… but Lobotka is the one who makes the difference most of all.”

Maradona junior praised the work of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

“He’s a very strong guy, he has quality, personality and plenty of room for improvement, I’m convinced he will become even stronger.”

He commented on what his father would say about this team.

“He would be proud, he would walk with his chest out. I’m very sure of that. And I like to think that from above he’s enjoying watching this Napoli too.”

Finally, Maradona junior discussed former Napoli talisman Lorenzo Insigne, who left on a free transfer in the summer.

“It wasn’t easy, and it still isn’t. I think those players who have Naples in their hearts never leave. Those who know him know he’s not having a good time, but I’m happy because I know he’s doing well in Toronto.

“In Italy we are capable of criticising everyone, we did it even with Baggio, Del Piero and Totti. I can say that the Lorenzo I know is a willing and decent guy, let me also say that I don’t remember a player who has always played at the top for 20 years, it’s normal that there are ups and downs.”
