Napoli legend Diego Maradona was reportedly stopped by Argentina’s border force on Sunday night for holding a false passport.

According to reports in Argentina, picked up by Sport Mediaset, Maradona was due to fly out to Dubai from Buenos Aires with his partner, until he was stopped by border police, who deemed his travel documents to be stolen.

However, speaking to Diario Popular, the former No 10 claimed the commotion was politically-charged.

“I won’t let anyone control my life,” he said.

“For 15 years, I’ve done what I want and no-one can tell me what to do. This complaint for theft is nonsense.

“My lawyer will be responsible for investigating this lie, which has been orchestrated by some politician.”
