Under-21 Italy Coach Devis Mangia explains why Davide Santon and Mattia De Sciglio switched teams, as “the Nazionale is one big squad.”
For this week’s international friendlies, Newcastle United defender Santon returned to the Under-21 side, while Milan’s De Sciglio received a senior call-up from Cesare Prandelli.
“There is an excellent rapport between me and Prandelli,” explained Azzurrini tactician Mangia.
“We work together and consider every angle for the good of the Nazionale, which is one big squad. The Under-21 and senior side all form part of a single entity.
“Of course, the choices are made first of all based on the needs of the senior team, then the Under-21s.
“Santon was called up by me also because De Sciglio went to the Azzurri.”
