Captain Marco Mancosu has claimed he is preparing to help Lecce stay in Serie A and then wants to discuss a new contract with the club.
Mancosu has been a key member under coach Fabio Liverani and the 31-year-old is the leading goalscorer at Via del Mare with eight, one more than striker Gianluca Lapadula.
Lecce sit third to bottom, on par with Genoa on the last safe spot in the League, and Mancosu is determined to get back on track when football resumes but doesn’t want the governing bodies to change the rules.
“If football resumes, it must do it with the same rules. It would not be fair to change the run-in with upheavals such as play-offs,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “Lecce want to play all the way, accepting only the final verdict of the table.”
The Giallorossi are scheduled to play Milan and Juventus in their first two games after the break and Mancosu has a great record against the big teams this term.
“Maybe I could immediately confirm the habit of scoring goals in the games against the giants. We will have two things to accomplish.
“We are at 25 points, third to bottom and on par with Genoa, and we can’t lose track.”
The captain has called on Diego Farias and Khouma Babacar to step up when the Giallorossi return to the pitch, adding: “I am counting on Babacar and Farias, limited by several injures. They have great qualities and will be able to excite us in the mini tournament that awaits us.”
Mancosu’s contract with Lecce expires in 2021 and the captain is waiting for a signal from the Salentini.
“In Lecce, I feel very good, but I would like my next contract to be meritocratic.”
