“There are less experienced players on an international level, but at this stage of the season there is also fatigue affecting them. I think the level of the squad is good,” the CT told Rai Sport.

“Federico Chiesa is a young player and it’ll take a little time, as it will for everyone, to learn and develop. There is quality throughout the team and they’ll improve with experience.

“All I hope is that these young players actually get to play, because that is the most important thing.”

Balotelli has made a big impact since returning to the Italy side after four years of being snubbed.

Leonardo Bonucci also complained the media is focusing too much on SuperMario and piling unnecessary pressure on his shoulders.

“There are players who make headlines for many reasons and Mario is someone who makes headlines. Italy aren’t going to the World Cup and therefore people are trying to analyse what the situation is, how we got here and what we could’ve done differently.

“Mario also doesn’t like to talk very much, so that inevitably makes people more interested in the mystery.”
