Roberto Mancini highlighted the many positives from this international break ahead of Italy’s Nations League clash against Germany.

The Azzurri will take on Hansi Flick’s side in their final match of this international break tomorrow and it’s likely that Mancini’s younger, more experimental squad will be seen again. The Italian coach is working to rejuvenate the squad following the failure to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar.

Speaking in a press conference today, Mancini first discussed the growth of the young players over this international break.

“It’s fundamental that even the younger players, in these 25 days, have trained with more experienced players. They can be improved in terms of character.”

He gave some initial impressions on the new-look Italy side.

“I thought they might struggle a bit more, being players who have done little together, they were first-timers. The character the younger ones showed, I think it was positive, we did a good job but there is a lot to do.

“When we are dominant, like with the other team, and fluid in the scoring phase we will be a step forward. There are many good things though.”

The Italy coach reacted to Matteo Pessina’s suggestion that he look in Serie B for other Italian talents.

“We can fish anywhere for players, in Serie B there are Serie A players who have gone out on loan because at that moment they don’t think they are ready. It’s an opinion.

“You can go to Serie B, to the Premier League, it’s not certain. There have been examples in history, some have gone straight to the first team and very soon to the national team. We will find them.”

Mancini spoke about teenage talent Giorgio Scalvini, who was recently called up to the senior team.

“He’s very good, he’s a boy – like everyone else, they’ve been extraordinary – and he can play in two roles, he’s technical, he has a good physique. He just needs to gain experience.

“He will become a great footballer. we believe in them a lot. Luiz Felipe can become important, as can Caprari I hope because he has been injured for 15 days.”

He commented on the team’s attacking insufficiencies.

“The midfield must be very attacking, when there is one player covering the others must attack. Against Hungary they did it often, with England a little less. Although we had the ball with Tonali.

“Scamacca has to learn how to move, to be connected with the team, given his physique he has to step up.

“He has to start making decisions, in the penalty area, understanding where the ball can go. The striker’s intuition. If he stands still in the area he hardly contributes. He must have the intuition.”

The Italian coach wasn’t too concerned about Lorenzo Insigne’s move to the MLS.

“I don’t know that. It will depend on how he is and what happens here. He has given so much to us, he’s a great player, it depends on what happens in the MLS.”

Finally, Mancini discussed the experience of this international break and what it means to the team coming off their failure to qualify for the World Cup.

“For me good days, firstly to work. Then I saw boys who can have a great future. The team did very good things.

“After Argentina I was sorry, but it was the first time since France – four years ago – where we didn’t play well and lost rightly. They were better and won. Two games in four years are okay.”

  1. Please, Mister.

Move on from Insigne. Put Chiesa on the Left as he plays at Juve.

On the Right, tanta roba. Any of Frattesi, Zaniolo, Politano, Willy.
