“It was natural with so many changes that we’d lack some consistency. There were some positives, other things we can improve, but the main issue was that these players haven’t really worked together before,” Mancini told Rai Sport after changing 10 of the XI that beat Greece on Saturday.
Stephan El Shaarawy was on target in his first appearance since moving to Shanghai Shenhua, while Napoli full-back Giovanni Di Lorenzo had an assist on his senior Italy debut.
“If El Shaarawy and Di Lorenzo are here, it’s because we believe in the players. When we get to June, unfortunately there can only be so many and that means some talented players are going to have to stay home. We’ll see how it goes.”
Mancini has equalled the all-time record of nine consecutive Italy wins, set by Vittorio Pozzo in 1938-39.
