Roberto Mancini had a long talk with the Italy squad at Coverciano today following the play-off defeat to North Macedonia.

The Azzurri suffered a shock 1-0 loss to Igor Angelovski’s side last night at the Stadio Renzo Barbera in Palermo, meaning they’ll miss out on their second consecutive World Cup. Mancini’s side will now play Turkey in a friendly on Tuesday next week.

As reported by Sky Sports, Mancini spoke to the Azzurri squad in the middle of the pitch at Coverciano just before today’s training session and he gave no signs of surrender following yesterday’s heartbreaking defeat.

The Azzurri coach was reportedly very calm and seemed to suggest that he intends to remain in the role, instead of resigning. It remains to be seen if this is simply a strategy to keep things calm until after the friendly against Turkey.

Mancini will speak at a press conference on Monday ahead of the upcoming friendly and his future will become significantly clearer then.

  1. Everyone fails to remember that Italy has only lost 2 games in their last 43. While they did not win when it counted it was not due to a lack of talent. Italy dominated almost every game they have played in, especially the last night. Italy’s main issue is a lack of a competent ST to put these games away.
I still believe Italy is a top 5 team in the world. However, they must continue to develop their young talent and give opportunities like other naruons are doing

  2. He has been a pretty good coach up until after the Euros. One would have thought , as a former forward, he could have got them to score more goals. The typical Italian caution then took over, so maybe someone with a football brain like Pirlo would be a good choice despite his inexperience.

  3. Ciao Amici!
Roberto is A Fantastic Coach and has done great things for us!
last night defeat wasn’t all his fault!!!
we had too many injuries and very little time to train thanks to Foreign Owners of Italian club not to postpone a game as they couldn’t care less if we make it or not!
If any bad decision by Mancini was not to choose Super Mario! when we were toothless in attack!

  4. The reality is the team played decently overall. If Immobile could score a goal (literally ever) then we would have a totally different perception of the team. The saddest thing in my opinion is that Mancini will of course leave when he has Italy really playing great football. The midfield and the defense, to the wingers link up play is quite creative and they play nice attacking football. Really if we find a striker with any kind of talent I think we could be a Top 5 team.

I cut Berardi some slack because he at least was trying to make something happen.. Immobile was just watching Berardi all night.. and when Immobile took that shot on the edge of the box (you know the one a 5 year old could take) it was really a culmination of his entire Italy career.

  5. He should stay. Anyone calling for him to be sacked is a stupid as the people who think the foreign Serie A problem isn’t a problem.
If there are no players to choose from what do people expect the guy to do?!
Change the law, 6-8 italian players per team. Forget all the cheap alternatives now. To miss two world cups in a row should be the kick needed to change things from today. Everything needs to change for Italy to lose to Macedonia should be all it takes to change laws!

  6. stay but change the squad you need to start from the central defenders and find some hungry attackers

  7. Time to move on for the coach he’s not same after last nite defeat it can’t be same now going forward

  8. Time to move on for the coach he’s not same after last nite defeat it can’t be same now going forward .

  9. I think Mancini has done a great job and instilled a way of playing that is appreciated by all football lovers. It will take time for this to become adopted throughout Italy. It would be unfortunate if he resigned because of a fluke 92nd minute goal.

  10. I like Mancini and what he has done for the Nazionale in giving them a more dynamic game, he has made some mistakes for sure, but giving Immobile the Captain’s armband against Nth Macedonia was just a slap in the face of Azzurri fans who can see a mile away that he is simply not worthy of the Azzurri shirt, let alone the captaincy.
