“We already started an important run of fixtures against Torino, even if it didn’t go well,” he said of that 1-0 home defeat.

“In football you need luck too and we hope to do well against a strong Sassuolo side. Eusebio Di Francesco deserves compliments, because his team is doing great and has no pressure. They are dangerous, young and when playing against the big clubs step up a gear.

“We have some problems in defence and I hope to get Ranocchia back, though we’re in bad shape with the full-backs.

“We are all improving, even if there haven’t been many victories. I am optimistic for the future and want the side to keep on getting better.

“The players can make that step up in quality and I have seen a mental growth over the last week. We just need to score more goals and get the brains working. There are players who can change a game.”

Mancini was asked about Mauro Icardi and new signing Marcelo Brozovic.

“I am convinced Icardi will go on to become a great hitman. It depends on him, but he has the quality to do it. Obviously we cannot think he is now on the same level as Tevez, Ibrahimovic or Aguero.

“Marcelo can be used in many different roles, including in a three-man midfield.”
