Former Italy CT Roberto Mancini has claimed that ‘untrue things’ were written about him in the press at the time of his move to become head coach of the Saudi Arabia national team, but admits that he understands not everybody would have made the same decision as he did.

Mancini stepped down from his position as head coach of the Nazionale in August, just weeks before an important set of Euro 2024 qualifiers for Italy, and was appointed in his new role in the Middle East almost immediately afterwards.

Though figures have not been officially disclosed, it is believed Mancini picked up a significant pay rise to take on the Saudi Arabia job.

Mancini gave an interview to Libero that was published on Saturday, reported via TMW, during which he explained why Saudi Arabia has been an interesting challenge for him on a personal level.

“It’s all different,” he said. “It’s an improving type of football, given the strong players who have arrived, but it’s not an immediate thing. It takes time to become competitive. We start from the bottom, but I’ve found a group of guys ready to improve.”

Asked whether it has been the most difficult challenge of his career to date, Mancini replied: “Yes, without a doubt, but at the same time it is also definitely the most compelling and inspiring.”

Then, Mancini gave his verdict on the backlash he faced at the time of his exit from the Italy national team.

“I understand the reaction of the fans, who may not have shared or accepted my choice, but they were also influenced by untrue things that were written in the newspapers. This is what upset me the most.

“We are talking about professional life and this is work. How many times do you get sacked after a great job but don’t talk about it? Coaches can always be sacked, but they can also decide to leave as well. It’s normal, it’s part of this profession.”
