Mancio was speaking as a guest at an event hosted in the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa and spoke on an array of topics.

Asked about the identity for his Italy side, Mancini states that the old way of doing things are finished.

“I like offensive football, I know we have won four World Cups playing in the Italian way, but I think we can play more offensive football today,” Mancini told journalist Marco Ansaldo.

“The days of playing defensive counter-attacking football are over.”

Mancini says the national side needs the affection of the Italian people.

“We are proud to have rekindled the Italians’ love for the national side, and at the European Championships in June, we will try to make our fans happy.

"Football is a factor of unity, if the Italian national team plays well and Italy win, they are happy.

“When I listen to the national anthem from the bench I feel proud and happy to be Italian.

“I believe our country is the most beautiful in the world, we live in the midst of beauty, nobody has the artistic and environmental treasures that we have.”

Mancini was extremely talented as a player, but that never translated into caps for the Azzurri, picking up only 36 in a 10-year period, but says under him that won’t happen again.

“We have tried to improve the many good young Italians that Serie A has offered, and so far we have succeeded.

“It’s not true that Italian football is stingy with talent, you just need to have the courage to let them play.

“I prefer a less-regimented player, like I was, to a more regular but less talented one.”
