Mancini: ‘Inter defeat was cruel’

Roberto Mancini said Inter’s last-gasp home defeat to Torino was “very cruel, but we fell asleep.”

The Nerazzurri dominated possession, albeit with few real opportunities, but were beaten 1-0 deep into stoppages.

“I am happy with the performance, as the team did what it needed to, held possession very well until the edge of the box, which is where we stopped moving and got lost.

The Nerazzurri dominated possession, albeit with few real opportunities, but were beaten 1-0 deep into stoppages.

“I am happy with the performance, as the team did what it needed to, held possession very well until the edge of the box, which is where we stopped moving and got lost.

“Football is so cruel and to concede at the last second like that… unfortunately that’s the sport. It did feel very cruel. At the same time, we fell asleep, so we should not have allowed them a corner in the first place and then marked really badly on the set play itself.

Inter absolutely did not deserve to draw, let alone lose, so I do say it felt cruel! We need more quality in the final third and more movement to create spaces, but we had kept the initiative constantly. We are on the right track.”

With this setback and last week’s draw at Empoli, can Inter realistically still challenge for third place?

“Clearly it would’ve been important to start the second half of the season strongly. All we can do now is roll our sleeves up and push on.

“We are getting really unlucky with injuries, as again today I had to use up two substitutions because of injuries and that gave me few options to change things up.

“I was not happy with the four forwards for what they did in the final third, but for the rest of it the team did well.

“Shaqiri played 80 minutes in the Coppa Italia this week and hasn’t been training much recently, so I didn’t want to risk him getting injured. He needs time to get into gear.”
