Roberto Mancini gives the credit to the Italy players rather than the change of system after beating England, relishing the fact they could still win this Nations League group. ‘It is very important.’

The Azzurri emerged with a 1-0 victory from San Siro thanks to the goal from Giacomo Raspadori, who controlled a Leonardo Bonucci ball over the top and curled into the far corner from just inside the area.

It means the Nazionale leapfrog Germany – who lost 1-0 at home to Hungary – and can technically still win the group to qualify for the Final Four tournament.

The last game of the group sees Italy travel to face Marco Rossi’s leaders Hungary on Monday evening.

“It is very important, as it gives us a sense of calm to be top seeds for the draw, we also have the chance to top the group and beat England, one of the best teams in the world,” Mancini told RAI Sport.

The change from 4-3-3 to a 3-5-2 formation was done primarily due to the number of injuries, but ended up giving the Azzurri a new lease of life.

“As I said yesterday, the system is one thing, but what matters is the character of a squad, the desire to attack and take control. We still have a lack of experience in the side and some very young lads, but we played well today.”

Italy are still desperately disappointed to have missed out on the 2022 World Cup, but have given a very good account of themselves in this Nations League campaign.

“A group with Germany and England, where we used so many young kids and had so many difficulties over the last few months, going into the final game with a chance to win it is important.”

  1. Excellent result guys, they even used a different system. The enthusiasm was very good. Always great to beat England.

  2. @mangacake yes always like to see England lose. Foreign investment can’t buy you a national team. Hopefully Germany will get the win too

  3. Milanista when have England ever been good? They always come up short when it matters. Italy are nothing special at present let’s not forget that.

  4. If Italy beat Hungary and get all their players back, winning the Nation’s League would also be nice in the trophy room,

  5. ur right gino – they need to play the younger italians, but as internationals games are slower – it didnt show, it would have if they played brazil / spain
