Brazilian side Vasco da Gama have announced that left back Lucas Piton has been given a pre-call up by Roberto Mancini for Italy’s upcoming Nations League commitments.

The Azzurri coach surprised many by handing a spot in the squad to Argentine-born striker Mateo Retegui back in March, sparking a debate regarding the usage and reliance on ‘Oriundi’ in the national team.

Italy have qualified for the Final Four stage of the Nations League and will face Spain on June 15, before possibly playing in the final against either Croatia or the Netherlands on June 18.

Vasco da Gama announced today that Lucas Piton has been pre-summoned by Mancini for Italy’s upcoming Nations League games. The 22-year-old left back holds dual citizenship and is eligible to play for either the Azzurri or Brazil.

This season, the full back has scored one goal and provided five assists in 19 appearances across all competitions for Vasco.
