After Chelsea and Manchester City, now Manchester United are being linked with a January swoop for Rafael Leao, whose contract with Milan is running down, as a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

The winger is only tied to the San Siro giants until June 2024 and negotiations for a new deal have dragged on for months.

His salary demands of €9m per season are certainly not going to drop after scoring with his first touch in the 2022 World Cup for Portugal.

That goal also further raised his profile and ESPN claim Leao is now on the shortlist with Cody Gakpo of the Netherlands for Manchester United.

The Premier League side need a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, who terminated his contract by mutual consent this week.

It would be an intriguing situation, as Leao is also pushing to replace Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting XI of the Portugal squad at this tournament in Qatar.

Along with his wage demands, Leao’s price-tag has also gone up with his performances at the World Cup, so it would be a minimum of €125m to tempt away the 23-year-old.

  1. Other news outlets reporting that United are instead backing off Leao to find a new center forward instead… Either way, Milan need to sell Leao and make a lot of money on him.
