Manchester United identify Varane’s replacement in Serie A – report

Tuttosport newspaper claims Manchester United have set their sights on Atalanta and Italy centre-back Giorgio Scalvini who could replace Raphael Varane at Old Trafford.

Scalvini, 20, is among Italy’s most promising defenders and has already become a regular starter in Bergamo under Gian Piero Gasperini.

Italy’s 2023 Golden Boy has scored one goal in 20 Serie A games this season and his contract at the Gewiss Stadium runs out in June 2028.

According to Sunday’s printed edition of Tuttosport (page 26), Manchester United are strongly interested in the Italy international, but Atalanta are unwilling to sell him in the January transfer window.

Inter have also set their sights on Scalvini who is believed to be valued at €40m.

According to Tuttosport, United see Scalvini as a potential replacement for France international Varane who dreams of returning to Real Madrid after a disappointing spell at Old Trafford.

However, if the Frenchman leaves Manchester in January, the Red Devils may need to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements as Scalvini is not expected to leave Bergamo next month.
