Many clubs are interested in Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, but no club came as close as Manchester United to signing the Serbia international.
SMS’ contract at the Stadio Olimpico expires in June 2024 and his agent Mateja Kezman has put extension talks on hold.
Regarded as one of the best central midfielders in Serie A, Milinkovic-Savic is not short of admirers in Italy and across the rest of Europe.
Juventus, Milan and several Premier League clubs have been linked with the signature of the 28-year-old over the last few years and according to Calciomercato.com, Manchester United have been the closest club to securing his services.
It happened in January 2019 when the Red Devils eventually signed Bruno Fernandes from Sporting CP for €63m.
Milinkovic-Savic, 28, has nine goals and eight assists in 45 appearances across all competitions this season. Arsenal and Newcastle remain interested in the Serbian and Lazio director Igli Tare has recently hinted at the midfielder’s exit over the summer.
