Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak discussed the City Group’s ownership of Palermo and their plans for the Serie B club.
The Rosanero have struggled with financial issues and poor results since their relegation from the topflight in 2017 and were reformed as a phoenix club in July 2019. After climbing up from Serie B and Serie C to the second tier, they were purchased by the City Football Group.
Their first season under their new owners saw Palermo finish 9th in the Serie B table, showing some positive signs but still needing to take a few steps forward before hoping to return to the topflight.
Speaking through the City Group via Gianluca Di Marzio, Al Mubarak discussed Palermo’s debut season as part of the organisation and their plans for the future.
“We continue to grow in a very thoughtful way. Last summer Palermo joined the group. Palermo stands for great history, great heritage, great region, great club.
“At the same time as we arrived, Palermo were promoted from Serie C to Serie B and as always, we have a project for everything we do.
“We support the club, we provide the management, the academy, the infrastructure and as a result the team grows.
“There is no reason why we shouldn’t expect Palermo very soon, hopefully, in Serie A. Palermo are a great team, we have many aspirations for this club.”
The City Group’s takeover of Palermo has divided fans, with some happy to finally have stable ownership, whilst others are frustrated with the changing landscape of modern football and multi-club ownership.
