Milan director Paolo Maldini explains why kick-off was delayed by 10 minutes in the Champions League against Tottenham and admits he has never been a fan of their new tactics.

It kicks off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at 20.10 GMT, delayed by 10 minutes after both teams were caught in traffic.

It had been due to kick off at 20.00 GMT, but both Spurs and the Rossoneri team buses were caught in traffic, arriving 30 minutes behind schedule.

“It took an hour and a half rather than half-an-hour to get here. London traffic is like that and, unlike in other countries, you don’t get a police escort to the stadium. We have to adapt,” Maldini told Sport Mediaset and Amazon Prime Italia.

Stefano Pioli has again set his men out in a 3-4-2-1 formation with Rafael Leao and Brahim Diaz supporting Olivier Giroud, pushing Theo Hernandez and Junior Messias into wider roles.

“We had done well in the first half of the season, then after the long break for the World Cup, it was like a whole other tournament.

“The coach tried to get things back on track by changing system, above all trying to keep clean sheets, because for a while we conceded a goal at every attacking move. We conceded over 10 goals in January alone, which wasn’t happening before.”

Speaking in his role as an Amazon Prime Italia pundit, former Milan defender Alessandro Nesta asked Maldini if he liked the new five-man defence.

“You ask me that knowing full well I don’t like the five-man defence in general! We always talked about that, Milan generally always played with four at the back.

“It was logical trying to find a way of making us more solid, which you can do with five at the back, or four plus an extra midfielder, there are many different ways.

“Naturally, I discuss the ideas, but the final decision belongs to the coach and is then supported by the club. What we want is to be courageous and ambitious even in difficult situations.

“We must always remember where we started from to get here. We became more ambitious after winning the Scudetto last season, which was entirely unexpected, so it raised the bar.

“Are we always ready to be competitive for victory? Perhaps not, but we must be pleased with how far we’ve come.”

The Rossoneri had never beaten Tottenham before the first leg result, while they have only one win in their last 21 away fixtures against English clubs, back in 2005 against Manchester United.
