Technical director Paolo Maldini has revealed Milan ‘are not in a hurry’ to renew Gigio Donnarumma’s contract but stressed the Rossoneri ‘must try’ to close a deal with the goalkeeper.

The 21-year-old Italy international started Serie A 2020-21 with a clean sheet against Bologna and continues to impress at San Siro.

But the shot stopper’s contract expires in June 2021 and he has yet to extend with the Rossoneri. Maldini has praised the youngster and hopes to tie him down to a new deal.

“Donnarumma is 21 and an absolute leader,” Maldini told Sky Sport Italia. “That’s the reality.

“He has played 220 games with Milan at his age, that’s absolutely uncommon. The more he goes on, the more he becomes a leader.

“He is a leader in training and with his behaviour. His growth has been truly exponential.

“We must try, it could happen in a week, 10 days, 20 days, we are not in a hurry. We are in this situation now, we know, so 10 or 15 more days won’t change anything.”

Milan continue with a home game against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League tomorrow, when Donnarumma is again expected to pull on the gloves to help the Diavolo advance.
