The first leg ended 1-1 at Old Trafford, with Simon Kjaer cancelling out an Amad Diallo header.
“It’s an incredible series of injuries, above all in attack, where we have serious difficulties, but our mentality must remain the same. This is what allowed us to get this far,” Maldini told Sky Sport Italia.
“We have been protagonists this season and it was difficult to expect more in the circumstances, but our strength is not settling. Our strength is not crying over spilt milk or moaning about absences, we just keep going.
“Our idea is to do whatever we can do. Systems also have to be adjusted based on situations, but the mentality must remain untouched.”
Milan beat Manchester United 3-0 at San Siro in the Champions League, a legendary performance.
“I did remind the players of that 2007 game and above all spoke to Pioli about tactical issues. Things have changed in football, but quality remains quality, and there was a lot of it back then.
“Let’s not forget where we started from, by climbing up the table in the second half of last season, going through the preliminary round on penalties to Rio Ave…
“These are all sacrifices that create further motivation right now. Playing against a great Manchester United side, who economically are on a totally different level, and feel we can compete.
“Manchester United have some important players return today and they are truly in good shape, but we are here to play our game.”
