Technical director Paolo Maldini said Milan ‘will not step aside’ in the Scudetto battle this season. ‘The Rossoneri are dreaming and won’t give up’.

The Diavolo are first in Serie A with 26 points from 10 games and are unbeaten in 22 consecutive League matches.

Maldini said he ‘didn’t expect’ the great run and admitted the numbers in 2020 could give Milan a chance in the Scudetto battle.

“We are not looking for statistics to improve, but for successes,” Maldini told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Honestly, I didn’t expect such a long streak in the League, but I had already seen the signs in January, before the world stopped.”

And Maldini said the Rossoneri have set a target to do better than last season, when the team qualified for the Europa League.

“The 2020 results say so [that Milan fight for the Scudetto],” he added. “But our season now unfolds over two years. We have set a target.

“The minimum is to do better than last time. We qualified for the Europa League and the idea is to do more.

“It would be absurd to not go for the Champions League, even if the ownership has not given us an input in this sense.”

He admitted the Diavolo are dreaming of the Scudetto and vowed Stefano Pioli’s men don’t intend ‘to give up’.

“Milan are dreaming and don’t want to stop doing it,” he continued. “Above all, they will not give up.

“I always ask the players to be ambitious. You need an almost utopian goal to reach the possible one.”

Maldini said he fears Inter’s season will develop and admitted Juventus are getting familiar with the ‘new methods’ of coach Andrea Pirlo, but he also added Napoli to the list of contenders.

“I expect a great growth of Inter,” Maldini said. “Juve have a young coach and have to absorb new methods.

“Juve, Inter, but Napoli will fight for the Scudetto too. We will not step aside. For me, there’s no difference, I think about our path. We go our own way.”

But Maldini highlighted Milan will not ignore their task in Europe to solely focus on Serie A.

“We fought so hard to play in it, it would be foolish to ignore it now."
