Milan director Paolo Maldini insists they ‘always believed’ in their Scudetto ambitions, even when nobody else did. ‘It would be an incredible result.’

The former captain was so excited by Sandro Tonali’s stoppage-time winner at the Stadio Olimpico last night that he ran down from the stands in record time to hug coach Stefano Pioli and the players.

That comeback 2-1 win not only kept them in the Scudetto race, but also guaranteed Champions League qualification for the second year running.

“I am very proud of what the team, the staff and everyone else is giving the fans. This true emotion is the core of our work, what makes us happy and provokes such wonderful sensations,” Maldini told Milan TV.

“In seasons like this, the objective is to do as well as we possibly can. We must aim very high. At the start of the season, many didn’t expect us to be this high up, but we must use that as further motivation.

“The statistics are clear. In order to stay up here and maintain this level, we must also maintain the same spirit of sacrifice. We are here because we always believed… even when we didn’t always announce it, we always believed.”

Maldini assures that while Milan have already achieved their aim for this season, Champions League qualification, they have no intention of holding back.

“We cannot make this seem like a banal target. In the last 20 years, Milan have won the Scudetto only twice, so it would be an incredible result.

“When you have the opportunity, you’ve got to give it your all. If things don’t go well, at least you know that you tried your best.”

  1. Too soon to celebrate, Paolo. Milan needs to stay grounded – we qualified for our main objective, which was to qualify for CL. Now if we can, we’d like to win the Scudetto even if the odds are stacked against us.

  2. Scudetto or no scudetto…i have been a fan for a long time. The scenes & emotion yesterday were special. More a family vs a team. I swear Maldini could still play the way he was moving!!!

  3. I think the loss against inter was fundamental to raising the psychic level of the team hence bringing the hunger and rebirthing the believe .. it’s 4 to go . Forza Milan all d way from Nigeria
