“Lille are truly a strong team. They are second in Ligue 1, the only reason they’re not in the Champions League is because last season was ended in March, so this is a huge test,” Maldini told Sky Sport Italia.
“We have the opportunity to secure qualification playing on home turf and we want to take it.”
There’s a curious ancestry in these teams, as Milan have Daniel Maldini, while Lille can rely on Timothy Weah, son of George.
“There are many wonderful stories that happen when you play for Milan. George was one of the best players Milan ever had, as well as an immense personality.”
The Rossoneri are not just unbeaten this season, but undefeated in all competition since the lockdown.
“We could already see many positive things from this Milan in January and February, admittedly the consistency is remarkable, but it also comes from a certain stability both within the team and the club.
“Stefano Pioli has been at a lot of clubs, confirming him after six months of good work was the most logical course of action.”
Milan are also top of the Serie A table, so can they challenge for the Scudetto?
“I don’t know if we’re ready to win, but if we reach the end of this season without the Scudetto, we won’t be disappointed. We’ll be disappointed only if we don’t do our best.
“It seems a bit of a reach to call us candidates for the title, but there are some years when incredible things happen.”
