Former Milan director Paolo Maldini confirms that ‘for 10 days we tried to bring Lionel Messi’ to San Siro when he left Barcelona.

The legend was speaking to actor Giacomo Poretti on his PoretCast show and spoke about his career, both as a player and a director.

That ended with his dismissal in June, but he reveals that there were plans afoot to achieve something extraordinary for the Rossoneri.

“For 10 days we tried to bring Messi to Milan, but then we realised it was impossible,” confessed Maldini.

“It is too late now, but a player like Messi is a spectacle for anyone to witness. When I read that he might even go to Inter, I got scared!”

Repeat Ballon d’Or winner Messi was a free agent when his contract with Barcelona expired in the summer of 2021 and the Blaugrana could no longer afford to register him.

Following several weeks of uncertainty and proposals coming in from various quarters, Messi finally signed for Paris Saint-Germain in August 2021.

That experience lasted only two years and the Argentina international has now moved to Inter Miami in MLS.

Maldini was also asked about the current Scudetto race ahead of Sunday’s showdown between Inter and Juventus at the top of the table.

“Inter have already won it,” was his response.
