Maldini gave Milan no resale value

The reasons for the ugly split between Milan and director Paolo Maldini continue to emerge, with reports the club was irritated at the lack of resale value in the squad.

The Rossoneri icon was sacked and his colleague Ricky Massara followed a day later by mutual consent.

There were certainly differences in vision and La Gazzetta dello Sport point out one of the main issues was the transfer strategy gave the players very little resale value.

In the last two years, sales only brought in circa €18m from the departure of Diego Laxalt, Andrea Conti, Jens Petter Hauge, Leo Duarte, Frank Tsadjout, Samu Castillejo and Alessandro Plizzari.

Most of that was the €12m for Hauge from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Looking at the current crop, there aren’t many who could realistically be sold at a profit without badly weakening the team.

Ante Rebic will find it difficult to get offers at €8m, while Divock Origi at least was a free agent, but Charles De Ketelaere, Junior Messias and Alexis Saelemaekers aren’t going to provide much of a profit.

The only players who could’ve brought in cash were lost on free transfers, namely Gianluigi Donnarumma, Hakan Calhanoglu and Franck Kessie.

On top of that, none of the players who were brought in on loan are staying, as Brahim Diaz returned to Real Madrid, while Aster Vranckx, Sergino Dest and Tiemoue Bakayoko are all on the way back to their parent clubs.
