This is the first time since 2011 that the Milanese clubs have faced off while in the top two of the Serie A table.

“I have memories of the past that can never return, but seeing Inter and Milan at the top in an important derby after so many years is really exciting,” Maldini told DAZN.

“Seeing the fans cheering on the team buses outside is something that warms the heart, during a time when we are missing them in the stands.”

These sides also clashed last month in the Coppa Italia quarter-final, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku having an ugly row.

“Asking if Ibra is ready for a derby seems a bit ridiculous… I do hope they can shake hands and put everything behind them.”
