Paolo Maldini is taking some time to consider a new role at Milan after Leonardo and Gennaro Gattuso terminated their contracts.

It was a big day at Milanello, because both sporting director Leonardo and Coach Gattuso officially parted company with the club.

Maldini had been expected to go as well, but so far hasn’t commented after two lengthy meetings with CEO Ivan Gazidis.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Gazidis offered Maldini a new role with greater responsibility within the club and some of the duties that Leonardo had.

This would largely be a technical director, so focusing more on the football side of things and leaving financial negotiations to Gazidis.

It’s believed Maldini is taking some time to think about it, but could make a decision as early as tomorrow.

Milan made it clear with their statements today that they are downsizing their ambitions and costs to close on Financial Fair Play targets.

In that sense, Maldini would be better at seeking promising new talent rather than Leonardo, who tends to prefer more established stars.

“AC Milan must now look to the future, whilst ensuring continuity, financial stability and sustainable growth,” was the statement released as part of Gattuso’s departure.

Part of Maldini's focus would also be on choosing a new Coach, because the options are getting increasingly limited.

Candidates Leonardo Jardim and Leonardo Semplici appear to be staying at current clubs Monaco and SPAL, while the reduced budget would not appeal to the likes of Max Allegri or Simone Inzaghi.
