Paolo Maldini looks back over Milan’s Scudetto-winning campaign, identifying the ‘toughest moment’ and why they were successful. ‘We were the most consistent.’

The Rossoneri pipped city rivals Inter to the post in the final round of the campaign, so as the fixture list is drawn up for the 2022-23 season, director Maldini analyses the way it all happened in a documentary for DAZN.

“We were stronger, the most consistent, we kept our heads throughout and were more prepared to react to difficulties,” explained Maldini.

“If we had tripped up against Atalanta, Fiorentina or Verona, we wouldn’t have won the Scudetto.”

Many blame Inter’s 2-1 defeat to Bologna, a rescheduled game from months earlier due to a COVID outbreak within the Rossoblu squad, for turning the tide of the title race.

“Don’t forget we dropped two points at home to Bologna, so anyone who thinks there are easy games in 2022 will get a nasty surprise,” noted the club legend.

Milan crashed out of the Champions League in the opening round, while Inter lost a lot of points during the February Round of 16 fixtures against Liverpool.

However, Maldini assures it’s hardly fair to suggest the Rossoneri had an advantage at the start of the new year.

“We came back from the Christmas break and played against Roma with 10 players out between injury and COVID-19.

“Perhaps that was the toughest moment for us, but we overcame that obstacle in a great way.”

Milan beat Roma 3-1 on January 6, despite Zlatan Ibrahimovic seeing a penalty saved by Rui Patricio.

It was a chaotic match that saw Rick Karsdorp and Gianluca Mancini sent off in the final stages.
