Maldini and Milan send ‘message’ after VAR allows handball goal

Paolo Maldini warns the club has run out of patience after Udinese’s handball equaliser. ‘Milan are top of the table and cannot always have debutant referees at San Siro.’

Rafael Leao had opened the scoring this evening, but Destiny Udogie appeared to bundle the equaliser over the line with his arm from close range.

Despite a pause for the VAR to check the potential handball, they opted not to call the referee over for an on-field review and the game ended 1-1.

“Our performance was not perfect, we are not sharp at the moment and we have again taken the lead only to be clawed back,” Maldini told Milan TV.

“Having said all of that, VAR is there to remove doubt. This is not the way it should be used and it’s not the first time. That was a clear incident, we need people who understand football to make decisions and that means referees.

“I will add more, and I send this message to those people who need to receive it: Milan are top of the table and we cannot always have debutant referees at San Siro. It is not easy to officiate at San Siro. Unfortunately, the referee made a lot of mistakes.”

There was also an earlier incident that irritated the Rossoneri, as the referee stopped play to book an Udinese player when giving the advantage would’ve allowed Milan to continue their promising counter-attack.
